Sandy Hammer > View of our cruise ship and the surrounding area at a spot almost equivalent to the Grotto of John. Without all the modern stuff, this could have been part of the view that John saw from the spot where he wrote the book of Revelation.
Sandy Hammer > The city of Skala - again similar to what John may have seen from his vantage point in the Grotto where he wrote the book of Revelation. I must admit, I don't know how he could write with a beautiful view like this to distract him. Must have been a God thing.
Sandy Hammer > An older portion of the monastary.
Sandy Hammer > Another mosaic...St. John himself with the book of Revelation. This mosaic is over the entrance to the monastary.
Sandy Hammer > Mosaic depicting St. John (left) and Hosios Christodoulos (right, founder of the Monastary of St. John the Theologan) on a wall outside of the monastary.
Sandy Hammer > Paintings depicting stories of the life of Christ, located inside the monastary on the outside walls of the church. Notice how the colors are rich at the top and fade toward the bottom; this is deterioration due to exposure to sunlight. Similar paintings were inside the church as well as much intricate silver work in the form of candle stands etc. We were not allowed to photograph inside the church itself.
Sandy Hammer > A tooled brass lantern in the colonade directly outside of the church. Note the vivid colors of the frescoes in the dark corner behind it.
Sandy Hammer > Beautiful mosaic on the outside wall of the Monastary of the Apocalypse and the Sacred Grotto. It depicts St. John (right, looking toward the hand of God) as he dictates the book of Revelation to his amanuensis (whose name I do not recall) who sits in the Sacred Grotto. The Monastary of the Apocalyspe was constructed covering and incorporating the Sacred Grotto. We were not allowed to photograph in the church or the grotto.
